Process Chart: Making Food Nutrition Labels-- Lab Testing Processes
Have you ever wondered how food companies make nutrition labels? How do they know how much fat, carbohydrates, or protein is in their food? Finding out is not a simple process-- it involves dozens of complicated lab tests, and each of those tests has advantages/disadvantages and are only fit for specific nutrients. To understand which tests can be used for which nutrient and how each nutrient is extracted and measured in the test, I mapped it out in Lucidchart.
TO MEASURE FATS:
TO MEASURE CARBOHYDRATES:
TO MEASURE PROTEINS:
These sorts of charts are useful for students learning about analysis, for professionals in the food industry educating themselves and their colleagues about their nutrition testing, and for lab professionals who are interested in simply standardizing these complex processes.
