Draw Lines and Objects

Our drag-and-drop interface makes it easy to draw diagrams. This tutorial will teach you how to add shapes to the canvas, add text, connect shapes and objects with lines, and use the shape auto-prompt feature.

Drag a shape from the Toolbox and drop it on the canvas. Press and hold your mouse button to select the object. Drag the object to the desired location and drop it by releasing the mouse button.

The New Editor

You can add text to a shape in one of two ways. Add text after you create a new shape by immediately typing, or double-click on the shape to add or edit text.

Text Box

Insert lines anywhere on the canvas. Just choose one of these three methods:

  1. Click the edge of a shape and drag your mouse.
  2. Drag and drop the line shape from the standard shape library.
  3. Right-click on the canvas, select “Draw Line,” and click and drag anywhere on the canvas to create a new line. The keyboard shortcut to create a line is “L.”

For information on formatting line color, line thickness, and other attributes, read the Work with Lines article.

The shape auto-prompt appears when you drag a line from a shape. This feature allows you to select and connect your next shape without returning to the Toolbox. To turn off auto-prompt, go to File > User Preferences. Under “After Drawing Lines,” select “Do nothing.”

The entire edge of each shape acts as a connection point to attach lines. Once you connect a line to an object, the line will move with the object.

You can align objects on the canvas using several methods. As you drag an object on the canvas, lines will appear to help you easily align the new shape with existing shapes on the canvas.

Note: If you have the “Snap to Grid” feature enabled, objects will still snap to the grid on the canvas, which may conflict with this auto-alignment method. If you would like to use this alignment method, we recommend disabling “Snap to Grid” (see instructions below).

You can also align multiple objects relative to each other. Just follow these steps:

  1. Select all of the objects you’d like to align by:

    a) holding down the Shift or Control button and clicking on each object individually, or
    b) dragging and selecting all of the objects at once.
  2. Right-click and go to the Align menu.

Finally, you can align objects using the “Snap to Grid” feature. By default, documents are set to snap to the normal grid size (20px). You can change this setting in the Page Settings panel of the Dock (found on the right-hand side of the editor).
